Residential vs Datacenter Proxies for Sneaker Copping: Which Wins in 2026
The single most common mistake new copers make is buying datacenter proxies because they're cheap. Then a week later, they buy residential proxies because the DCs got banned. Save yourself that step — here's what actually works on each surface.
The one-line answer
For sneaker sites, use residential proxies. Datacenter proxies work on maybe two sites in 2026: Foot Locker EU and JD Sports UK (sometimes). Everywhere else — Nike SNKRS, Yeezy Supply, Adidas Confirmed, Shopify (Supreme / Palace / Kith / Bape) — datacenter IPs get flagged inside 5 seconds of your first request.
What's actually different between them?
Datacenter proxies
- Hosted in Amazon, Google Cloud, Hetzner, DigitalOcean, OVH, etc.
- IPs come from ranges like
13.x.x.x,34.x.x.x,52.x.x.x. Anyone can look these up in a public WHOIS and see "AMAZON-02" as the owner. - Cheap. $1–$3 per proxy per month, unlimited bandwidth.
- Blazingly fast — 10–50 ms latency.
Residential proxies
- Real IPs from ISPs — Comcast, Verizon, BT, Vodafone, KDDI, etc.
- Look identical to a real customer's home connection because they are a real customer's home connection (sourced through SDK partnerships or peer-to-peer networks).
- More expensive. Pay per GB — around $8.50/GB in 2026.
- Slower — 200–800 ms latency. Rarely an issue for sneaker requests.
Why sneaker sites can tell the difference
Every request your browser makes carries a chain of signals. Nike, Shopify, Ticketmaster, and every other high-traffic site runs those signals through a fraud scoring engine like Kount, Riskified, or a Cloudflare Bot Management rule set. The one that matters most: the ASN (autonomous system number) attached to your IP.
ASN lookup is essentially free. When a request lands, the site queries: "what network does this IP belong to?" If the answer is "Amazon Web Services," the request goes into the bot bucket before the first byte of your bot's clever browser fingerprint even matters. If the answer is "Comcast Business" or "Verizon Fios," the request looks like a regular customer.
Residential proxies aren't magic — they just carry the right ASN.
When datacenter proxies still work
Some smaller sneaker sites and most non-sneaker uses (SEO tools, price monitoring on Amazon product pages, generic scraping) don't run ASN checks or run them poorly. In those cases, datacenter proxies are the right call — they're 10x cheaper and 10x faster.

The right mental model: proxies are risk, not identity
A proxy doesn't make your bot look like a human. It removes one specific reason a site would already suspect you're a bot. The site is still watching TLS fingerprint, request timing, mouse curves (on browser-based bots), and 30 other signals.
Residential proxies buy you the ability to compete on those other signals. Datacenter proxies on sneaker sites don't even let you play the game.
How much residential bandwidth do you actually need?
Sneaker checkouts are small. A full task chain — home → PDP → ATC → checkout → payment — is maybe 300 KB of proxy traffic (page requests only, not full asset loads). For a run of 20 tasks on a Nike SNKRS drop, budget:
- Monitor mode: 50 MB per hour per task if constant refresh
- Cook mode: 5–10 MB per task per drop attempt
- Queue holding on FCFS drops: 100 MB+ per hour per task
Most solo copers using 20–40 tasks burn 2–5 GB per drop. Group buys running 500+ tasks burn 20–50 GB per drop. Plan accordingly.
